WORKFLOW & COLLABORATION / Same family of products or Speciality products?
« on: February 01, 2017, 10:18:02 am »
Some believe that in order to have a better collaboration, we need to stick to the same family of products as much as possible (ex: All Autodesk products or all Bentley or all Trimble...etc.) through out our project. They still consider this Open BIM as they also export IFC if needed.

Others go for the best products for them no matter what family as long as they are specialized in their fields as they all export a common extension as IFC. They believe they can get the most out of a specific software because of certain capabilities yet once it's an IFC, anyone can use it.

What do you think?

thanks

STANDARDS & GUIDELINES / BIM Level 2 vs BIM Level 3
« on: February 01, 2017, 10:04:59 am »
Do you believe BIM Level 3 can be achieved if BIM Level 2 is hardly done? Or does BIM Level 2 have to be at an advanced stage (ex: full 4D & 5D) in order to aim for BIM level 3?

Thanks

I have been on both the design and fabrication side for structural steel. Using SDS2 in the past we would share the model through CIS2 which needed some mapping efforts. Now with Tekla Structures, there are direct links available. If the fabricator uses Tekla we obviously share the native file as it permits us to use the model checking capabilities for shop drawing approvals. If not, CIS2 or even IFC if the fabricator has a IFC to steel converter.
