WORKFLOW & COLLABORATION / Re: Current M.O. for exchanging information
« Last post by David Watson on January 17, 2018, 05:56:17 pm »
Hi all.  I think I could summarize Claudia's comment by saying "information exchange is possible, but not easy", which is really a task for software developers to sort out.  Am I right?

IMHO, what we need to help sort it out are "background" technologies, and promote the use of open standards to help that technology.  Things that users never see (in cell phones, that would be the network you're on, the protocol used by the phone to communiate with towers, etc).  The product (the phone in this case) should encompass all those standards to make it easier for us users.

The buildingSMART IFC is one such technology, and "linked data" is another technology.  Linked data is not something you buy and turn on, but something that could be built into an application or data service designed to acquire and share information quickly and efficiently.

I guess the linked data approach may be something relating to API data exchange with tools such as https://flux.io/ right?

WORKFLOW & COLLABORATION / Info on Start-up Page
« Last post by Erik_P on December 01, 2017, 09:45:42 am »
What info do you guys put on the start-up page? I've seen minimalist with project number and name to very intricate with rendering and lots and lots of information such as project team members, worksets, linked models, etc.

What is your preference?

To me, less is more!

TOOLS & TECHNOLOGY / Re: Who's Scanning?
« Last post by EliasV on September 29, 2017, 08:35:49 pm »
I worked for a metal siding/cladding company, and we installed aluminum composite panels. Had some problem using laser scanning, because sales representative told me to go look for the two endpoints of the distance I wanted to measure in the software, and well this was not precise enough, because once you zoom in, in a group of points to pick the point, it’s not clear what you are measuring, and there are just too many points clustered together so you don’t know which one to pick. I would love to hear from you guys which applications you use to adapt the information from the scan to a 3D model so that it can be a true representation of the built environment. It’s important to mention that I was looking for a 1 to 2mm precision.
