Key Responsibilities:
Facilitate with the start up and implementation of BIM process on a project level with the assistance, guidance and oversight of the Corporate BIM development manager.
Coordinate with Project Managers and Construction Managers to develop a project specific process for utilizing or creating 3D information for the purpose of estimating, logistics, planning, scheduling, coordination, field layout and/or facilitates management.
Create project specific protocols regarding communication and data exchange, nomenclature, format, 3D workspace orientation to ensure interoperability as required.
Facilitate consultant and trades through multiple project phases with virtual design and construction process.
Assist in the creation of project specific contract language for tender packages for 3D submission process and 3D asbuilts for facilities management.
Obtain quotes from vendors and outsourcing resources to meet requirements for newly awarded construction project.
Review, coordinate and manage the creation of Models.
Project deployment duties include; installing software, organizing, maintaining and setting up FTP sites, basic training & support for project team, coordination assistance, file conversions and documenting process and solutions for reuse.
Champion 3D coordination on active job site, act as liaison with project team, consultants and subcontractors to facilitate process and maintain Master Project BIM database.
Collaborate with the Scheduling department to build and maintain 4D scheduling model.
Identify opportunities and recommend solutions that will enhance or improve processes. [/li][/list]

Required Knowledge and Skills:
Educational and Industry experience requirements include; Engineering degree or equivalent combinations of technical training plus experience/knowledge of Civil Construction practice.
Proficiency with computers especially with BIM software including;  REVIT, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley, NavisWorks, ProjectWise, Vico, etc
Thorough understanding of corporate and industry practices, processes, standards etc. and their impact on project activities is vital.
Specific design or coordination experience with formwork would be an asset.
On site Construction Experience would be an asset.
Strong written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills (tact, diplomacy, influence etc.) skills are essential.
Excellent customer service skills, a passion for problem ownership, and a customer-first attitude.
Previous experience working in a similar role providing construction and technical support.
Proven experience in priority setting, multitasking, and working with minimal direct supervision.   
Ability to understand and apply knowledge from technical manuals required or finds solutions to technical issues using online resources.

Other than making it a contractual requirement, the best option may be education. You may need to show them the benefits that BIM has, not only for your sake, but also theirs. Show them that their workflow can be improved and provide support when they need it. It may be a little more work for you to help guide them, but should payoff when you can properly coordinate in 3D.

I have a few smaller consultant firms that use Revit as a '2D drafting tool', other than refusing to have them on projects what else has anyone found that may work in this collaboration issue? FYI this is a Structural consultant and having a 3D representation of their model is desperately needed.

That's surprising to me - I don't think I've really come across anything yet that couldn't be viewed in Navisworks.

My understanding is that most curtain wall manufacturers are working with solidworks. We have received IFC files from solidworks models but they are usually too heavy (LOD 400+) to be integrated in most of the BIM software used by designers even navisworks. Would have been nice to compare design intent with detailed curtain walls but no success  >:( ...

Processins time (modeling) is one variable

Integration time (interoperability) is another one.

Based on the amount of time spent on each one,  should a decision be made about which solution between "integrated software suite" or "best of the market" should be used

Processins time usually is a bigger chunk, so going for integrated might slow you down at the end. But it varies from one company to another

At the time being, none of the big software company can pretend they have the best in each discipline.
